23' Cuddy or CC with Yamaha 150 4 Stroke's?
Does anyone have a pair of these on a 23'?
I currently have a pair of '95 25" Yamaha 150's on a 23' Cuddy and am considering upgrading to the 150 4 stroke's. I would like to hear how the 23 performs with this setup. These motors are supposed to have all the speed and get up of the 2 strokes with 40% better fuel eff. They weigh approx 475lbs which is approx 60lbs more per motor than what i have now. My ass end is lower than i would like, but the scuppers are just above the waterline. I am considering changing to a 100 (have 144 now) gallon fuel tank or partitioning my tank and keeping more of the fuel forward to compensate for the extra weight in the rear. I have been lurking and am a bit confused on all of these performance figures some of you are quoting. Some of you are getting the same speeds as me with 4 stroke 115/140's. I cruise at 4200 RPM's at 30 knots with 4 people, 140 gallons of fuel and a 200 lbs of gear and ice. With this same load i get around 38-39 knots WOT at 5400RPM's. I am running 3 blade 17" pitch Powertech S/S props and can get around 5700 with a light load and trimmed way up. My engines are mounted on the top hole so they cant go any higher. I have to trim all the way down when i get on step to prevent cavitation so i think going higher would hurt more than help. Am i setup wrong or are we not comparing apples to apples with loads, etc. I am also considering the Hermco if i go with the 4stroke 150's. Any comments are greatly appreciated, and sorry to be so long winded. |

Re: 23' Cuddy or CC with Yamaha 150 4 Stroke's?
I have a single 225 on the back of my 23’ CC and the boat is well balanced. I can’t speak about the performance but I will say I would go with a bracket with any 2 motor setups. Make sure it has enough flotation to support the extra weight.

what are some bracket options...
I checked out the Hermco's and they seem nice, but are rather expensive at 4000.00. What are the advantages/disadvantages with fiberglass/aluminum? What are some others to consider?

There is alot of good info on those brackets throughout the site .... try the search function .... I've personally done a bit of "looking" into those brackets and if that’s the way I proceed, Seamark (Potter Bracket) wins hands down in my eyes. Several of us saw a "new" aluminum bracket on a boat at a boat show. The boat had been demo'ed and already showed signs of corrosion, where the bracket was already in need of re-powder coating. I'm not sure of the buoyancy #’s with the other brands but I think the Potter bracket has more buoyancy then its aluminum counterparts. I've seen this bracket in person, not yet on the boat, and its awesome. A real nice feature of the Potter bracket is that it is totally sealed (you could throw it in the water and it would float on its own... the other brackets need to seal against the transom to create the flotation chamber. I think we have all heard of a boat or two where the bracket is full of water) I've also seen(pictures) a 23 SeaCraft with the twin engine version mounted ....
