Transom door that covers the entire outboard...
Hi Guys-
This has sure been a busy summer. I have gotten none of the projects done that I intended to back in June, it's that whole work thing.... Anyhow, I aim to replace my transom door (still) but have been seeing a few fold down type doors that have a large fiberglass hood that covers the outboard while the engine is in the lowered position. Probaby you guys in the Carolinas and Florida are familiar with them as that is where I have seen most of this type of door. It's like the one on the Spanish Fly 32 SeaCraft. Could anyone point me in the right direction for a company that may make these? I would like to look into these before order the starboard to make a new door like the one I now have. Thank You!!!!! -Hooper |

Hoop-
Take a ride over to the Edey & Duff factory in Mattapoisett. A lot of the Conch 27's they make come standard with that engine shroud. Also, I know SouthShoreDryDock has a Conch 27 listed for sale. I am sure the sales guy wont mind you poking around to see how the thing is made. -Ed- |

Re: Transom door that covers the entire outboard..
I don't know who builds them. The only one I've ever seen is on Jose's boat. Some 3/8in Divenacell would make a great core for one. Mock it up in 1/4in lauan and make any modifactions in that. then take it apart and use it for a pattern to cut the Divenacell. Then cover that with glass. A layer of 1808 and 6oz cloth on each side would be bulletproof and still light weight.

If you are willing to pay for custom work, I know a few companies that would have no problem making one for you. Problem is, one-off projects get wicked pricey.

I'd be willing to give it a shot myself, but my experience with this sort of thing is so limited that I'm afraid it would turn out poor.

I'm thinking about the same project for the winter. Laying up some luan or foam board into a rough shape is the only way to go. I have an '85 hull and the low splashwell as I believe you do. So far I haven't a clue as to how it should look. I plan on visiting some boat yards, including the builder noted in an earlier post for some ideas. If I finally get the formula worked out, I'll advise you. Perhaps you can do the same. Dink |

Re: Transom door that covers the entire outboard..
My 18 footer had a 5" board to keep water out of boat when I bought it. I think it was a very serious flaw but it didn't bother me because I have done a lot of fiberglass work on my previous boats to save money.
I had some plywood Nidacore left over from another boat project. Nida core is light and will not rot like balsa. It is also very strong. I cut pieces just like wood and used fast set epoxy to glue together. I then filled with epoxy mixture to get curves right. I then covered with the no itch cloth sold by Defender industries the streches very well. The last part is the most time consuming. fill and sand, fill and sand. boat is in Groton, CT. I will take some pictures if you like ED |
