Yep, just as Bobber stated, that's what is known as a "poop-preventer" and is usually used for the first couple years of an engines life (kinda like the way you baby a new car). The shade it provides also helps to keep the engine from overheating in the hot climates and very warm waters where these flats boats are used.

HeHe Yes Chaz thay are. It's a poling platform. You stand on it to get better vishion when site fishing and you pole the boat from there. It's mostly used for catching fish in skinny water.

Mark, I guess I should have looked closer, I would have seen the pole mounts. So I quess the Seagull theory is out.
