Default Performance of Yamaha T8 kicker

I'm thinking of getting one of these little engines for my 23 SeaCraft. What kind of performance can I expect with this engine. I'm looking to be able to troll for Salmon with it and use it for back up should the big 250 Yamaha fail. Does anyone have this engine on a 23 or bigger boat that can give me some advice?

I'm not sure what a T8 is, but I have a Johnson 15 on my Mosley 19 and I feel it just the right size for the job.

Strick,
If the T8 is 8hp, it might be a little small for a 23. You probably want at least 15hp or else you might be running the 8 at full throttle most of the time. Although it's not apples to apples, my father had a 5hp Evinrude on his 20' Wellcraft CC and we had to run that things at least 3/4 throttle to troll a tube and worm rig, which is a very slow speed, like 2-3mph.

Nah, 8hp is way to small for a 23. I used to run a 9.9 on a 20' GW I had, and WOT it did 6-7 mph on a flat day. I would think a 25 four stroke would be a good kicker for a 23, it might get you to 12-14 mph if your lucky?

The high thrust yamaha's are great engines with a super low gear ratio and are generally propped with larger diameter lower pitched props

2.92 ratio on 8T hp High Thrust model
2.08 ratio on regualr 8hp four stroke model

Here's a good article on the 8t from Continous wave.
22 outrage with 8t => 6mph

My Dad had a 15hp Honda HT . . . and it pushed his 25ft pretty well 6 - 7 mph.

Thanks Tim-

My 15 merc big foot would push the boat at 7mph so maybe the T8 will perform the same. Well the dealer says it will out perform the 15 hp merc...but I guess I'll wait to see. I'm going in at the end of the month to have it installed. I like the steering linkage he hooked up in that article.
