I think that the Max is 175HP.

175 makes in run good, maybe 150 but its a heavey boat and will run better with the extra HP

I have a '72 Seafari, OB model, and the original ID tag under the helm says Maximum HP 240. A friend of mine says the sticker must have been intended for an IO model, not an OB. I have a 150 Merc on mine that is plenty of power.
When I got the boat 5 years ago, it came rigged with a '72 Chrysler 120, which the previous owner said was how he bought it new in '73. With that old Chrysler motor, it got on plane very easily, although it had a top speed of about 27-28 mph. (Remember, the Chrysler was rated for power at the flywheel, and actually produced about 90-95 hp at the prop.)
If you're not a speed demon, I'd say a new 115 hp is enough, and 175 is way more than enough.
I gotta admit, though, I have a friend with a '76 20 CC, it's a former I/O rigged with a '95 Yamaha 250 on a B bracket. It's lotta fun blasting along at 60 mph!

My 1970 20 has a 200 HP Merc. With 78 gallon tank and a
T-Top. With 24 inch Bennett trim tabs, slinging a 21 inch
LaserII prop. Top speed on the GPS is 64mph. The more
weight the slower the top end. Sure comes in handy with
the extra ponies to get away from those frequent Florida
storms.

According to the original specs the maximum hp for an OB was 175 and for an IO was 240. Of course, with rebuilt and reinforced transoms and brackets I guess it would be safe to say that 250hp would be OK. Would it be safe? Depends on the operator.
