gents,
in the case of the florida capsize, they should not been out there anyway. what i am curious about is that it seems that a few seacraft has flipped over when it takes on water. i have done some search on the internet and check out these links. so far 3 cases counting the recent incident http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/20...calnews12.html http://www.valdostadailytimes.com/co...ll+missing.htm |

hey Ed, I think its all operators judgement, maintenance etc and it goes with any boat. Lots of examples- I heard of a couple of those big new Big Luhrs sportfishers going down, as well as a 27 albie here a couple of years ago and a 36 hatteras i used to mate on as well. Point being, i think any boat can and will in the right conditions, sink, flip etc. thing is when they flip with an air pocket you at least have something maybe to cling to, that hatteras and ablie sunk like rocks blub, blub, blub!!!! I would rather be in and still feel safer in a seacraft than i think any other boat in its size. JMHO !!!! craig

Couple things maybe to consider. Some freinds of mine lost a very good friend 25+ years ago in a SC 23' CC off Block Island. If I remember correctly, they were fishing tight to the island when a rouge wave came over the transom and flipped the boat. That is how the story was related to me several years ago. One or two of the three people, all accomplished anglers and boaters, died.
I'm going thru and doing work on my transom, adding some knees, drilling out crappy screws and bolts and thru hulls, putting in new wood or dowels and reglassing (barely on schedule for Newport). Today i removed the thru hull for the baitwell that comes up thru the bottom of the hull, 1/2 inch of open bilge, then the putty below the baitwell and then the baitwell itself. Several places for this thru-hull to bite into. Well, it did not take much effort with a looe fitting pipe wrench to get thing unglued at all. And the worst thing is that where it is in an unviewable area under that baitwell, it is difficult to examine that area closely, let alone under way. So, everyone please tripple check your thru hulls, especially if they are more, uhh, mature like the ones in my 79....

exactly John, heres another example- 100+k (if not 150) carolina classic sank off here yesterday- sunk like a rock- doesnt matter how much you pay, you need to know your boat boat and thru hull fittings/ whatever- maintenance etc.
