Re: GPS/FINDER
76,
I just bought and installed this unit on Labor Day. So far it works fine. I bought the Navionics chart instead of the Nautic Path. For no reason other than the Navionics was more of an "industry" standard chip. The store didn't have both to compare the two. I did find that the nautic path had a lot of clutter on the screen with water depth. Some of the other clutter can be removed with eliminating info through the map detail category. I was comparing this unit to the Garmin 198C. I just liked the look of the Lowrance screen and chart better than the blue chart by Garmin. It looks more like a paper chart than the garmin unit. Further more, I think putting hard drives in these marine units is somewhat new. How long will a hard drive last out there? Bought mine from boatersworld on the Cape. I also purchased the 2yr ESP, just for piece of mind. Both West Marine and Boatersworld were trying to steer me to the Garmin. It was a hard decision to make. I later found out that Garmin pays commission on units sold. That unit comes with a 12 degree 200 kHz transducer. If you’re in waters less than a hundred feet, it might be better to go with the single frequency unit that has a 20 degree cone. I spoke with Lowrance tech support the other day and they were easy to get on the phone and were a big help. You can download the emulator for that unit on line; I works just like the real unit without the ability to use your e-charts. They do have demo charts for download. It also has a sonar player for playing recordings saved to SD or MMC cards. Just a reminder, you won’t be using an e-chart at the same time as recording a sounding. Should be interesting to see how they do with the NMEA 2000 network. I have the navman fuel transducer now. It might be nice to use their format at some point. Good luck, Jim |
