The tow hooks on the back of my 1971 SF20 have left some pretty bad rust stains running down the transom. The boat is painted in Fighting Lady Yellow Awlgrip. Any one have any suggestions on how to remove the stains without harming the paint? I am not very familiar with awlgrip and I don't want to do any damage to the paint. Also any ideas on how to stop the rust from running down the transom in the future? Thanks.

Sometimes the grade of stainless on the hardware in not up to snuff. The running rust will continue until you replace them with a quality pair. Until then you can use Barkeepers Friend It won't hurt your paint. Use the liquid form and rub gently. It should disappear in a few seconds. I buy it at Ace Hardware

I don't believe MaryKates On-Off Hull Cleaner will hurt the paint though I would not leave it on long. Might try wetting the surface first. Very concentrated, and I think a Muriatic Acid base. Incredible stuff. Just respect it. Like strong wheel cleaners, use Dishwashing gloves to prevent burning off one layer of skin for two or three days. Nothing better for the guy who does not bottom paint but may leave in water for a few days. Stuffs awesome for all around cleaning, markings, scuffs, you know the deal.

Another good product is Zud Cleanser. Comes in a can like Comet or Barkeeper's Friend. It reacts chemically with rust or hard water stains and will take them off with a short soak. Just rub it on and keep it wet. It will remove tannin stains if you leave the boat in the water too. Good stuff.

There's a liquid called "Rust Stain Remover" for fabric and porcelain. It's sold in grocery stores, etc. It's mild and removes rust. Forgot the brand name but comes in a brown squeeze bottle. About $3.
