It also gives the bait a drop back effect that dolphins in particular seem to like.Just as they do on outriggers.
When they hit they have a few feet of free-lined bait before they feel any resistance on the line.

I Don't feel too sorry for you NE folks as I am too busy pumping water out of my Florida room. Wilma gave us some slight modifications
