Default Recent Project 1988 23 CC

Just wrapped up the 1988 23 I was working on. As usual I am kicking myself for not taking enough photos, in particular before photos and I will get some in the water photos this weekend, I hope.

Anyhow a little history:

The boat is owned by a neighbor, he purchased it a few years ago in North Carolina, it had a 1993 Yamaha 225 and for a year it ran OK, things were amiss with the engine, lack of trust, and there were assorted electrical gremlins about. Long story short the owner was not thrilled with the reliability of the boat so he repowered it the following year with a Yamaha 200 HPDI. Unfortunately, the next year was plagued with electrical issues; the boat was literally HOT, all the brass thru hulls were eaten through and it was very fortunate the boat did not sink.

Over the winter he contacted me to look at the boat and see if what we could do, the initial job was to re-wire the boat to eliminate it from "eating" itself, and add a wash down system.

After this was done the list grew to new fittings, re gel coat the deck, new plumbing, fix innumerable gouges in the hull, and basically freshen her up and make her ready for the season.

Working on this boat was a comedy of uncovering what previous owners did to the boat and what the people who rigged the engine forgot to do.

The highlights include (2) #2 gauge lugs one Pos. and one Neg. that were stuffed with 6-8 8-10 gauge wires that went into the rigging tunnel. After following all these wires they went......NOWHERE, they were all cut at various lengths and were either sitting in the rigging tunnels or sitting on top of the fuel tank, needless to say we found the hot source.

Other item was in the transom where there were 2 plastic thru hulls below the waterline, being plastic was bad enough but what I found doctored to one of the thru hulls was a first.

At some time the thru hull was replaced but instead of replacing the thru hull with one of the same size it was replaced with a smaller diameter fitting that was wrapped in duct tape to make up the difference.

Here is a pic:

I took both the thru hulls out and filled them in here are the progression shots:

There were also ramdom thru hulls located in places where they should not be so I filled them all in and re- gel coated them, I do not have a final shot of this but will get one if I remember:

The deck was totally worn thrugh so I re-gelcoated it here are some shots

The bottom was painted here is a shot of Anton the "Crazy Quiet Russian" getting it done

In orer to achieve easy access to the new in line valve for the wash down system I cut out the aft section of the livewell, a new bilge pump system was added as well as the rule wash down pump on the transom ( all the holes in the transom were treated with epoxy and them sealed) The transom was solid but will likely need replacement in the next 5-6 years.

Jason Great job as usual. I sure the owner appreciates your great work and will continue to keep her looking good for years to come. Rich

Well, No pictures yet of launch, hopefully this weekend, it was blowing 25-30 last weekend but I did back her in the drink to test all fittings and all was well but that Rule washdown pump was a mistake on my part....

I liked it from the description as it had a plastic housing and very little metal, and I like their bilge pumps.

Great pump but it does not have a pressure switch built into it ( my fault for overlooking this) so it is a constant on once power is applied and that was a bad idea, it also did not have the pressure I had hoped it would, probably the way I plumbed it.

I would up replacing it with the SS housed Pro-Blaster and will now enter the boat in the Newport RI marine fire squad or convert it to jet propulsion....

Pictures soon

I'm pretty sure it's the mounting Jason. Those pump's don't like to lift water. They like to push it.

When the ballvalve is open I bet the water come's up as high as the bend in the hose. So the pump is air locked. it may work whan you have some foward movement with the boat, but that doesn't do you any good when your anchored up. Plus, just the foward movement of the boat will fill the livewell without the pump even turned on.

As far as I know, all the livewell pump's don't have a on demand.
Now a lot of the washdown pump's do, but they are diaphram style pump's.

Warthog-

I think you are correct, The scary thing is, I mounted the pump just shy of the waterline so when the the ball valve was open the water should of gone directly to the pump. However I may have been just that 1/2 inch to high thus nullifing the effect.

I think I may make a seachest for another boat and this pump will be the ticket.

Anywho- took her out for a sea trial yesterday and the new pump is great as well as the performance of the boat with a single 200 HPDI, I was surprised but the boat jumped onto plane and at WOT I hit 35KTS.

not too bad

since I was solo no pictires yet, maybe this weekend if the owner comes to pick her up.
