Default Re: Mercruiser Alpha One repair

I think the Alpha-One set up is really simple and the MerCruiser manuals do a very good job of explaining their operation and repair. Why not just do I good once over yourself?

Do an engine tune up, change the gear oil in the upper/lower units, check drive shaft alignment, grease everything, perhaps adjust shift cables. The shop manuals have things you should check every XX hours anyway.

I put all used MerCruiser Alpha One parts and a 2.5L in my 20' (which I stole from parts boats) and it runs and drives great. After installing everything, I feel I have a good handle on the system.

I should have said, if you are crafty and watch the Want-Ad and Craigslist, I think you can score a whole spare outdrive for short money (less than $500). I don't know how much work at the dealer costs, but I imagine you're ahead of the game in the long run by just getting a spare powertrain. I scored my spare set up for less than $400 bucks, w/ motor (bad head gasket), gimball housing, outdrive, trim pump, etc. I have a full set of extra parts should something go south.
