Default merc 175

hello all i have a few questions pertaining to my 1985 175hp merc

1. how much water comes out the pee ( pardon the lack of proper wording) hole on the motor. mine dose not seem to leak alot at idle, but if the motor is raised to 2k it seems to work fine.
2 I changed the lower unit oil is was brown not milky but brown. should i change it a few time to flush it to work out the old oil or change it and just change it in 6 months and be done with it.

Any other suggestiong or advice would be appricated . all i have ever delt with is jon-rudes.

may be a bad impeller or water pump, as long as the engine stays cool you should be good. The lower unit oil.....as long as there is no metal shreads, chunks, etc, than you are ok. (AS far as I know)

i have a 1984 200 merc. pretty much the same engine. i have a new water pump in mine and it "pees" like crazy at idle. so you might just need to change the impeller.

beradtke - get a water Pressure gauge hooked up to that motor. There was a good post a while back about the poppet valve on these mercs. The pee issue you see is normal behavior for mercs. Mercs don't pee freely until the cooling system has built enough pressure and the tstats open up. You can monitor this behavior with the water pressure and Temp gauge.

thnaks all off to do some home work on what a poppet valve dose and where it is. might consider putting a water punp in it since i just bought it and dont want to have to repower right away.

Standard yearly maintainance on that motor:

Impeller
Gear oil
Thermostats
Poppet Valve
Plugs
Disassmeble and clean the carbs
New fuel pump kit.
New Inline filter
New Fuel water Seperator
Decarb every 100 hours
Inspect all wiring and bleeder holes
Check for leaks around hydraulic Trim + Tilt rams

I also recommend running w/o Spark Advance Module/idle stabilizer and with timing set manually. Dump the Oil Injection and premix. The oil injection on those motors is notorious for failing. I have two bad cranks in my garage from motors with busted plastic gears.

I'm sure I'm leaving something out . . . but that's all I can think of now.
