The brass plug is tapered pipe thread. It will unscrew from the lower white aluminum cup, which will also unscrew from the filter element. If you remove the brass plug you must prevent the lower cup from turning. There are wrenches available in that shape or a pipe wrench will work. Those are my least favorite design. You can still get 10 micron filtration with a stainless upper housing and clear/blue lower bowl which is more "user friendly" having the pet-cock design drain and is see thru.
