Default Yamaha SWS vs. Direct Injection

I have twin 15 Fichts that run good. Hrs are 600 or so but they run good. I have a friend whose boat burned in a boatyard as a result of the boat next to his fully engulfed in flames.

The motors are 2000 Yamaha SWS 150's. The boat was totaled but motors were insured separately so they are his to keep or sell. I can get them at market value but my question is this:

What will be the fuel comsumption difference between my Direct Inject 150s vs. his old style injected engines. Some will say it doesnt matter but it does. I can do all day trolling at the canyon on a nice day for 100-110 gals. If it roughs up I may burn a little more than that.

Does fuel consumption go up 5%,10%, 15%, 20%? While on the topic, what are your thoughts about the diff between carbed, injected, and direct injected economy wise?

They like gas and oil but, will last a long, long time if maintained. The local TowBoat has almost 2000 hrs. on a pair of those.

My old 23' Seacraft had twin 1998 Carb 150 HP Yamahas. At cruise I would average around 1.6 miles to 1.7 miles per gallon. These engines would start up no problem in warm weather but would sneeze and sputter a little in the cold stuff. Alot of choke was required at startup.

My new 23' Secraft has twin 2000 200 HP Yamaha X66's. They can average between 1.8 and 1.9 miles per gallon. They start up easily in every kind of weather.

What about vs. Direct Injection? I am afraid Ill cut my range too close for offshore.

Let me get this straight, you're fishing the canyons (like the Hudson) in a 23' Seacraft? To those who are not familiar with the NE canyons they are about 80 to 100 miles offshore. The weather out there can turn in a hurry.

We also have places like the Chicken Canyon, the Fingers and various ridges which are between 15 and 50 miles offshore. Right now that is more my range in my SeaCraft.

When you go out there do you bring a liferaft and one of those GPS beacons?

Anyway in getting back to your original question isn't it simply a matter of math? I can carry 150 gallons of gas in 2 tanks which should give me a range of about 250 miles. I have been told that for offshore fishing that I should always have 1/3 of a tank for emergency purposes.

Net/net if I ever get brave enough to go to the Hudon in my boat I figure that i would need about 50 gallons of spare fuel (which I would put into my tanks as soon soon there is room).

Hope this helps (I doubt it though).

The fuel burn should be around 2.2 mpg for your current motors with DI. Somewhere around 20-30% better then ox66's.

Unless the Evinrudes are on the verge of a problem, I wouldn't switch. You have passed the point a long time ago if there were going to be any failure issues on your fichts.

I agree with Danny, unless you can get the SWS at a great deal.

Thanks for replies, I am suprised to hear 20-30% - wow! I figured that much over carbed but not DI from injected.

Peter you are right the canyons are far. From down here the tip of the Baltimore and Wilmington are 66-68 miles and I look for action just short of there.

I typically fish only the best forecasted days and usually stop at 30-40 fathoms (45-60 miles).

Smart weather decisions, a current raft and a 406 ebirb are on board for sure. I had a 26 shamrock and fished many times out there and sold a 27 Albemarle for my seacraft so when offshore is in the veins, you gotta go.

I have taken my 20' Seafari up to 85 miles offshore by carrying extra fuel on board, and have taken a Seafari 60 miles across the Gulfstream to the Bahamas many times.

Carry a kicker or have twin engines; and the life raft, EPIRB, and a filed floatplan are absolute essentials.

Remember, the sea is capricious and can turn on you in a moment.
