Yamaha 130 oil problem
I'm at about the 6 or 7 hour point of Yamaha's 10 hour, double oil break-in process and I've been using a 6 gallon portable so the mix of oil/gas doesn't happen in the new main tank.
Anyway, twice today, the small oil tank under the engine cover overfilled. Smoke everywhere, but no alarm bells or flashing lights. I cleaned up the mess in the pan under the power head, emptied the small tank, checked the filter, etc. cleaned the port side plugs, replaced the star'b'd side ones (I was on the water both times and didn't have a lot of tools with me), added oil to the main tank, and watched as the small tank filled to the high limit line when I turned on the key. Figured I was home free, but the exact same thing happened about 3 hours later. Any ideas as to what's going on (bad sensor, etc.)? Why so much smoke when this happens, and why is it so difficult to blow out the engine in order to get it running right again? Is the overflow getting into the combustion process. Finally, what's the permanent fix/solution? Thanks in advance |

If this is a new moter I would take it back and have it fixed under the warrenty.

I had my 130 go through different oil tank issues (remote tank / tank on the motor). the pump on the remote tank died once, replaced that and then the main pump shorted out. I would think that the linkage is not properly attached between the carb and the elec oil pump, not letting the oiling occur simultaneously with the throttle or the remote tank pump is the wrong pump-maybe for the V-6 which needs more oil. The sensor on the small tank I think only goes off when it's low not too high. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice and comments.
It is a new engine, but a 2003 that I bought from a dealer in Mobile, AL. I have the factory manual. but they don't address this issue in either their technical sections or the overall problem solving section. Based on suggestions from someone else. it looks like the problem may not be in the sensor unit, but may be caused by the use of an incompatible tach and rigging harnesses. Hopes this may help others: I disconnected the tach, took the sensor unit out of the main (engine) tank, cleaned it up, held it vertical, turned the key switch to on, and could hear and see the oil pump operate when I moved the float up and down. |

good deal on the oil tank resolution, I will have to remember that harness/tach issue. The boat and motor look good from your new pictures posted. That motor was amazing for my 18SF. Crazy, light weight motor at 358Lbs. Any extra crate motors in Alabama??

Don't know. I got mine from Grady Marine in Mobil, and I dealt with Kevin Hunter. They are out there. The one I bought was the second one I saw on the internet in the fall of '06.
BTW, ne wtach and harnesses came today and are installed. Also linked up the FM gauge and tied that into my Garmin 182. Didn't get out to run it, but everything looked like it was working fine on the mooring. |

I had the exact same problem with my 2003 130 Yamaha as well. My dealer was as baffled about it as I was. The problem progressively improved as I went off the double oil mixture and from 15 hours on (after changing a couple sets of plugs), I've never had another bad issue with the engine. Hope this helps
