Holiday tips
Thanks to all for your help, advice, and generosity.
I,m finished with the coffin recore and could not be happier with the results.I will post pics and doc when I figure out what`s wrong. Think maybe a usb cable for my digi cam. I went to have a little chat w/ George at G&S boatworks locally for a little pep talk before the recore. He`s a former copter pilot and military A&P { airframe & powerplant}. He asked me what I was using and I said marine ply and MAS epoxy. He shook his head. Uh Oh. He said you want to use poly above the water line to let it flex like it was designed to. He then said most marine ply is made with oil based glue which is not compatible with poly resin..... 60 clams for the ply. At least I hadn`t bought the epoxy yet. Why was straw falling out of my shirt? If I only had a brain. Shazbot! What am I doing? I frantically called the ply manufacturer and they used Phenol Formaldahyde glue , not oil based. Whewwwww. George said that`s why so many cores fail. The company that made my ply said they supplied Tracker with oil based ply back when. Lesson learned. Truly great chefs will share any and all of their secrets because they are confident of their superior skills. George was kind enough to pass this on to me. He asked me how I was planning on sealing the core pieces. I said poly now. He related a tip given to him back in the day from an old timer. I LOVE old craftsman as they have big bags of tricks. It`s called a flash coat. Mix the resin and cut it with acetone to the consistency of water. Two coats. Sand and wipe with acetone in between coats. This achieves two things. Deep penetration for sealing and a good base for bonding to avoid future delamination. He also does this if he has to stop the lamination and continue at a later date. It softens the previous set up and you get the nice purple color your after When caulking with marine silicone , lay some 80# mono under it and in the future when you reach for an ice pick to remove it , you pull out the mono and voila. Done deal. I`m on the hook for standing rib roast and Yorkshire pudding. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! Thanks to all the chefs here and their kindness. Can`t wait for April in Sebastian. xoxo Family Stark |

Re: Holiday tips
Yeah, I had already cut beveled and faired the core pieces, and was thinking I lost the time and materials. George said to use nasty old weathered ply as it really soaks up the flash, and the price is right.
