Default rod holders open to bilge?

I know some SFs and MAs have open cut-outs or cavities in the face of the gunwhales towards the stern, but in my 73 SF20, the "rod storage" is towards the bow, and the gunnels are closed in behind them. Therefore, it seems any water that gets in the rod holders would go straight into the hull/bilge? Have you guys done anything to address this? Maybe the rod holders with the plastic caps?

Not much can be done about this. Plugged rod holders hold water. Plugged rod holders that have a nipple on the bottoms with a clear hose on them, simply allow you to re-direct the water. They do sell flush gunwale rod holders that have a flip up cap on them, when not in use. Hope this helps.

Do you have a source for the above?

I've seen some made by Attwood but I think they are plated zinc.

Those black rubber caps (both Attwood & Perko) are crap. They last about one summer season then crack, get in the way, turn your fingers black, and look cheezy

Do yourself a favor and install a "T" to your self bails' drain or the blige pump outflow tube. Then open up your wallet and get the nice polished S/S rod holders with the nipples and route the water to the "T"
BTW: You can also run any flush mount hardware drains to the same setup

That's the easiest fix right there. ...or, I've seen people just have the liner cut out of the boat and that solves the problem as well

perko also makes replacements for their rod holders and they will fit Lee's and do the job although i am not crazy about them. i only have one rod holder that drains into the bilge (in my transom and i use one of those wood plugs they sell for emergency hull repairs- only leave it in the holder when not using the boat because of cosmetic reasons but it works awesome
