Seacocks are designed for that purpose. They are much safer. Ball valves are not designed to replace a seacock. Do the research, ask a few surveyors, and look at some of the refurbished boat pics on this site.

Thx Reel,
George at G&S said that`s the way to go, and I`d seen similar set ups here , but if that`s a better mousetrap, better mousetrap it shall be. Any other guidance is greatly appreciated. Now on to the tank......I`ve read lots of posts on this ,so I hope to get this right at the very least.
Thx
Sandy

What exactly IS a seacock?
Perhaps a means of obstructing inflow? I think the tragedies you speak of are due to non marine ,non bronze, non U.L. NON MARINE rated,BRASS imposters:Box store crap!
Just back from a local{FRIEND} /wholesaler and after casually perusing his books at great length , I cant seem to find a suitable seacock. Do you have a preference for brand/ ball valve / gate valve? Mine`s an Apollo. All seem to have a much smaller triangular footprint that is not compatible.
You make a very valid point about household CRAP that has NO business in salt water.I took your advice and did a little digging. What did I find? A BOXSTORE ball that didn`t have ANYTHING LEFT OF IT AFTER 1 YR. WOWSY WOWSY WOO WOO. I thank you for thinking of me and others here! I have that kind of mind and thought of a glassed up backing plate from ply. I left myself @ 3/4"gap. Thoughts please.
Thanks for all of us!
I had the very same concerns as to "What If?".

If it wasn't pouring rain I would take a pic for you. I'm NOT telling you this is the absolute correct way because I'll be glassing down the same mount later (much later I hope ) All of this was pre-fit before sealing/screwing/etc. I took a 6" x 6" x 3/4" plywood, drilled the HS pick-up clearance hole, put on 3 coats of epoxy, and 4200 it down, mounted the high speed pick-up with SS screws long enough for a good bite, screwed the seacock (a glorified flange mounted ball valve) to the HS pick-up tightly, screwed it to the wood using 4200 to seal all of it. I realize mine is somewhat temporary because I believe the wood should be glassed down.

Look up "ringleaders" boat/refurbish.

Here's a pic of the epoxy coated wood. The larger is for thru-hull transducer. With all that said.....I read recently in a sailing mag. that Groco is recalling a lot of 2-3 yr. old seacocks because the SS stem material did not meet their spec. (made in china) I think mine falls in that group.

I think I`m too much of a newbie to have seen Ringleaders work. SOOOOOO much to learn. Much gratitude and thanks for all the help. Haven`t had a boat since the age of 12. 13` Whaler and a Beetlecat. It`s a quaint little old wooden semi displacement gaff rigged sailboat that CAN`T be capsized by dumb kids. I brought dumb to a new level. Flying jibe anyone?

Thx,
GFS
