Hey guys
My brother posted on one of the other forums about this, but I wanted to post here because my guess is that more people check this forum.... We have a 23 cc that has a 250hp gas inboard, with a traditonal shaft setup (NOT stern drive), that we are in the process of repowering. We are trying to decide between a 220hp or 260hp Volvo inboard and are looking for any suggestions from you guys on what is a better engine size for this boat. Would a 220hp be enough given that we have a traditional inboard setup (which is supposedly less efficient than a stern drive)? We would maybe need to upgrade the shaft if we go with the 260hp, so thats a factor in the decision, but that will not stop us from going with the 260hp if thats the right engine for us to have. Thanks in advance for any help on this.

more hp= less strain on the motor to keep the boat up on plane and probably better fuel economy as well- I have 260 in my boat as well- efi will mean even better cruise than carbed. i am turning and 1 1/4 shaft and it is fine- good luck !

my motor is gas with 325 hp. I turn a 1 1/4 shaft. I have not seen a diesel with a 1 1/4 shaft ever. (not that i've been looking either). It's a torque issue with diesel, I would go with the bigger shaft just to be safe which ever motor you go with. good luck. I wish i was wondering which diesel i was putting in my boat.

no, mine is gas but originally was a diesel, i dont know the specifics on the original diesel 30 years ago but i am fairly certian neither the shaft or any of the running gear have been changed. the weight to power ratios in diesels are needless to say much better now though!!!!

Three year's ago I repowered with a Marine Power (From Jersey, but are all over), with a 315 Carb motor, since I could repair maybe and if you look at the spec's for a carb motor it is rated t 315 @ 4600 RPM and the fuel injected is/was 330 @ 4800 RPM, go figure that out. I do have a 1 1/4 shaft. Look at the older post for fuel econmy everone gets. I like the extra power on the hole shot over the 233 HP MERC I had before and the fuel econmy went up some, but these boats will like fuel.
