Default batteries

i have twin engines right now that are set up that one battery runs one engine and the other battery runs the other so if one battery dies you can't start that engine could i just install a dual battery switch and run both engines on battery 1, battery 2, or both or is there more to do then change where the power leads come from?

thanks
matt
