There is not a "pie" hatch in the deck and I'd like to try to avoid having to remove the console if at all possible.

How would I "peg" the gauge?

If the wiring is correct, the pink wire comes from the fuel
sending unit to the gauge. With power on, put a jumper wire from the back of the gauge "pink" terminal and touch the jumper wire to ground. The gauge if good will peg to full.
Usually you can hold the other end of the jumper in your hand with out any fear of being electrocuted touching the ground.

Sorry I cannot help as to where the sending unit is on your tank.

Can't help you with the location either except for the fact that mine is at the rear of the tank on my 18. I'll also re-post NoBones' link to WEMA sending units. I'm finally getting around to replacing mine as I'm really feeling the need to get offshore for some permit tug-o wars. Orderd the unit Sunday and it arrived this morning. Well constructed insturment. What like most is there is no electricity exposed to gasoline.

`89 20 sf pie plate behind console in middle of coffin cover.

I had to re-core my coffin cover and did not have to do a complete disconnect as the wiring had enough slack. Popped the console and put 3 2x4`s under for support.Slid right out. I have the wide console though. 42" flange to flange. My coffin hatch is 8`1" x 26 1/4".

I also have a gauge on top of the sender. Remove and clean the crud out. Test w / a small round magnet on the bottom by following the arc from e-f. Needle should peg.
