1973 Potter SF - Fuel Tank Sending Unit Location
This season my fuel gauge stopped working and through a little trouble shooting, I've determined it is likely the sending unit that has failed. Assuming my fuel tank is original to the boat, does anyone know the exact location of the sending unit? If I could get at it through the deck without taking the center console off, that would be ideal, Thanks

I should also note that it's a 20 footer

Re: 1973 Potter SF - Fuel Tank Sending Unit Location
First, I wouldn't assume that it's the original 35 year old aluminum tank. But if it's configured the same, the fuel sending unit should be under the console, just to the inboard side of where the rigging comes thru the deck.
I'm not near my boat, so I can't give you an exact measurement. Hopefully you will find a "Pie" hatch already there. Lloyd

Did you peg the gauge to make sure it`s working?

Re: 1973 Potter SF - Fuel Tank Sending Unit Locati
There is not a "pie" hatch in the deck and I'd like to try to avoid having to remove the console if at all possible.
How would I "peg" the gauge? |

Re: 1973 Potter SF - Fuel Tank Sending Unit Locati
If the wiring is correct, the pink wire comes from the fuel
sending unit to the gauge. With power on, put a jumper wire from the back of the gauge "pink" terminal and touch the jumper wire to ground. The gauge if good will peg to full. Usually you can hold the other end of the jumper in your hand with out any fear of being electrocuted touching the ground. Sorry I cannot help as to where the sending unit is on your tank. Re: 1973 Potter SF - Fuel Tank Sending Unit Locati
Can't help you with the location either except for the fact that mine is at the rear of the tank on my 18. I'll also re-post NoBones' link to WEMA sending units. I'm finally getting around to replacing mine as I'm really feeling the need to get offshore for some permit tug-o wars. Orderd the unit Sunday and it arrived this morning. Well constructed insturment. What like most is there is no electricity exposed to gasoline.

Re: 1973 Potter SF - Fuel Tank Sending Unit Locati
`89 20 sf pie plate behind console in middle of coffin cover.
I had to re-core my coffin cover and did not have to do a complete disconnect as the wiring had enough slack. Popped the console and put 3 2x4`s under for support.Slid right out. I have the wide console though. 42" flange to flange. My coffin hatch is 8`1" x 26 1/4". I also have a gauge on top of the sender. Remove and clean the crud out. Test w / a small round magnet on the bottom by following the arc from e-f. Needle should peg. GFS |
