Armstrong Bracket
Alright fellas:
I have a single engine armstrong bracket that has been repainted (white) and looks practically new. It has a full width (72"?) swim platform and had new nonskid put on it when painted. The bad: It may need a small paint touch up since its been moved with me three times to different houses, and it is missing the armstrong plate but has the cutout for one. It also has a roughly 3/4" hole in the bottom for what must have been a drain plug that is also missing. I have held it up to the transom of a 20' seacraft and it looks like its a dead on match for the 20' if you were to glass in a full transom. May also fit the 23, I dont know. I was going to use this on my hiliner project but it would have to be heavily modified to the tune that i am going to have one custom fabricated for it instead. I can get some measurements and pictures but was initially looking to see if there is any interest in such an item. I am looking for $850 for it. Located on cape cod. Any interested parties? Thanks |

Re: Armstrong Bracket
Ok, took the measurements and put some pics up on photobucket. A friend and I were talking and he reminded me that i dont know for sure if the manufacturer is armstrong or what. The bracket has the number 88031 stamped inside so it certainly appears to be a major manufacturer bracket. I thought armstrong or gil for sure. It was purchased off of ebay as an Armstrong brand bracket and i never questioned it. Anyways, the bracket measures 72 1/2" long and is 25" wide at its widest. The angle is 17 degrees from perpendicular to the top swim platform and mounting plate or 107 degrees or however you want to look at it. The bracket definitely needs some paint work on the underside etc. The top of it is in excellent shape which is what you see when in the water but the underside and corners are a little scuffed up. Structurally this bracket is perfect. Pictures can be seen at photobucket, link below. Upon discovering the need for more substantial painting (not the end of the world), I am lowering the price to $800 Firm. I still prefer a local sale but am looking into shipping on a pallet. The bracket weighs approx 150 lbs. Let me know if interested, i am listing here first and then alas, off to ebay. Cheers. Brendan.

Re: Armstrong Bracket
From the pic's it looks like the platform is straight? No camber, right? Also, are you pretty sure about the 17 degree transom angle? I am definately in the market for a bracket but the angle may not be right for my application.I'll double check my transom today.

Re: Armstrong Bracket
That bracket looks to have about a 2' setback without much flotation. Might be ok for a 23 with an old light V-6 Merc, but putting it on a 20 might really sink the stern unless you make the flotation tank bigger. Capt. Lloyd recently went thru that on his 20 with a 140 Zuke, so you might want to search his posts for the nice mod he made to his bracket!

Re: Armstrong Bracket
Joey, the flange is made to go against a flat transom, but the top (platform surface) has some camber to it. Im pretty sure about the 17 degree, ill recheck when in the neighborhood. I did hold it up to a 20 Classic and it looked to be a good match for a 25" shaft outboard. The angle was just about right with the way the boat sits in the water. The bracket can always be cut and rewelded if need be. I thought the angle was great for a 20' to the point that I am considering holding onto it for a future 20' if no one is hot to trot on it.
Bush, the compartment is large enough that I imagine it add the bouyancy to float the bracket itself, not add buoyancy to the boat. Afterall, the 20' seacraft was shipped from the factory with an 85 horsepower wasnt it? Making the issue more the motor choice than that of the bracket. I could see a 130 yammy two stroke or 140 zuke four stroke on this bracket paired to a 20'. Thanks for the input. |

Re: Armstrong Bracket
Thanks for the reply. I actually have a custom carolina boat that I had built and am rigging out that I need a bracket for. There is no doubt that that one would work and certainly provide enough floatation, but my transom is 10 degrees.I probably could fudge it a couple degree's but I wouldn't want to miss it by 7.
Thanks, Joey |
