Default Have you seen this?

At first glance I thought it was a SC but I think it may be a Rob...the competition or some might say the no competition. Still pretty wild.

That was spooky Brandon, brought back some nightmares. A few years back I had a 23' IMP Inca, a heavy, solid and capable offshore boat. We were headed back toward Pt Loma from a day of fishing outside the Coronado Islands. We'd seen a large wave in the distance for some time and we saw a submarine running at the surface chugging about 20 knots. Suddenly we were faced with its wake - a long breaking tube easily 10-12' overhead. You could have surfed this wake for hours. Perfectly formed, huge, but mellow rolling tube.
I noticed it and yelled at my partner to square it up. He managed to get pretty square, we went vertical, myself and another friend were thrown against the transom or motor cover and the boat came down hard on the back side of the wave. Gas was seeping out of the carb and we were dead in the water flooded. After sitting a good while letting the fumes dissipate we fired up and headed home. Everybody says they would have quartered the wave, I still believe if we would of taken it any other way the boat would have flipped and we'd be history. Kind of like the gymnast in the pointy end of that cc... Good thing that baby fired up and got turned to quarter or hey would have been swamped by that last wave. Maybe I'll ante up for a fuel injected motor now...

I've gone through waves that high in my last Seafari going out Jupiter Inlet in the winter. Calm roller outside the inlet, but breaking 10' between the bars. I took them at about a 20-30 degree angle off perpendicular to avoid pitch-poling. The wave broke just before I crested and I had water wash all the way up and over the windshield. Scary!

unreal, I'll bet the key was bent and that starter was hot enough to fry an egg on. Obviously they needed to change their underwear soon afterwards.

I was thinking the same thing Gillie...he already had some water in the boat from the first two.

We get a similar effect in a narrow passage to the open from our area of the 30000 islands of Georgian bay(Pointe Au Baril, Ont.). If you get off course 30', you'll be on the shoals so you cannot quarter with a big boat. When going out,I usually get water over the windshield in this spot. Fr. Frank's right, it does get the old heart racing but knock on Teak, I've never lost power(even with outboards)! That's a situation that I hope I never have to face but probably will.

Anyway, hope y'all enjoyed

Brandon

Well when I use to live in the Northwest to go fishing we would have to go out over the Columbia Bar.

The Coasties after enough times out rescuing boaters now close the bar at peak flood tides, and will not let you out or in until it settles down. This includes commercial and freighters.

Common sense is not always used.

That vid has been around for years. I believe they were filming a surfing contest.
