Volvo I/O Drive Train in 20' Sea Craft
Have any of you ridden in a 20' open fish model with the 170hp/280 volvo penta drive? Any feedback regarding the performance with an I/O? Better or worse when compared to a bracket and an outboard?
When in the hunt for a boat to restore I was thinking that a boat that originally had a closed transom would be great for adding a bracket and an outboard. However, the more I think about it, I'm intrigued by the thought of the I/O. Thanks! |

Re: Volvo I/O Drive Train in 20' Sea Craft
The 280 drive is a fabulous drive, bullet proof if its taken reasonable care of. However, if its not good when you get it, it can be phenomenally expensive to repair and you only want the very best to put their hands on it. Watch out for hydraulic leaks in the trim cylinders and make sure the "pop-up" mechanism (allows the drive to rise when you hit something), is in good shape. Those are the two common problem areas in that drive, at least that I know of.
I'm not familiar with 1/0s in a 20 ft seacraft, but it should be very good if its not tail heavy. Low center of gravity is always a good thing. |

Re: Volvo I/O Drive Train in 20' Sea Craft
i currently run a vp 280 outdrive and as mentioned before they are just about bulletproof as long as the wrong mechanic hasnt had his hands on/in it. the trim rams are Very expensive to replace. they tend to be difficult to get right but when you get it running right there is no breaking it. volvo also designed the coupler between the upper and intermidiate housing to shear if you hit something solid instead of tearing up the gear sets. on common problem with the drive is that they tend to come up when in reverse, just replace the springs for the reverse lock hooks on the underside just under the exhaust bellows. the main upside of this drive is that if you happen to get a hole in the u-joint bellows the boat will not sink, but it will damage the u-joints. i have never had major problems with mine and trust it 80 miles offshore
