Day on the water, night with a few fish
Spent the day Sat anchored up in Broad Bay with my sister, friend Chris, and fiancee Sarah. Was a really nice day, got there a little too late for swimming cause I teach Saturday mornings till 2pm but it was a good day hanging out just relaxing, got my first catnap of 2011 on the boat.
Sarah enjoying the weather: Around 630ish headed back to the dock to drop the girls off and pick up my friend Sean to do some fishing. Motored over to the grass islands near the dock and worked jig/grubs all up and down the islands. Tide was slack low at this point and all that was felt was the occasional drum roll of spot/croaker, never hooked one so not sure which species it was. Sun started to go down so moved and found pretty much the same, tap-tap-tap of small creatures. Sun went down and headed over to see if we couldn't find anything in some dock lights. Worked up and down but didn't find much, worked a dock for a while that had produced earlier in the week but no go there either. Finally around 11pm decided to head home, but stop one more time at that dock on the way back. Pulled up and first cast WHAM fish nails it, comes off a few seconds later. Realized a couple seconds later that the light is full of them, can see lots of fish eating bait in the light. Work this for another 20 minutes and its slow for the first bit but picking up. Manage in the first few minutes a 16" Bluefish: A 17" Bluefish: and a 16" schoolie: Starting to pick up and see the lady who cut the light off on me the other night walk to the back door, and of course cuts the lights off on us. Not too bad though cause a lot of fish in her neighbor's dock light too. Not two minutes later see him come to the back door, watch us for a second, and off goes his light. Try a few more casts just hoping that it won't affect the fishing, and I guess we don't leave fast enough cause he comes out to the dock and stares at us from 20' away. Finally he grumbles something and leaves. Light never comes back on. You would think these people would want the dock lights on for security, and that leaving them on would deter people from coming to their docks and stealing stuff, I guess my friends and I look too much like thieving riff-raff in Sea++ We try for a bit longer but its obviously the bite was done so we head back to the dock. |
