to be honest i dont really know i was kinda planning on using a good pray paint with really good clear coat. thats what my buddy did on my airboat and it seem to work pretty good on alum. but i have no clue about on gelcoat so all suggestions with help on how to do it. it can be a redneck job its a fishing boat not a show boat.

I hear ya, I didn't know if it was a beater or if you were trying to put a nice finish like some guys do with the leafprint.
Spray bomb it up if you don't have a compressor and gun. They make urethane primer and urethane topcoats in spraybombs, they are superior to a regular old laquer spraybomb. They cost a little more than a can of krylon but it covers so much better, and it lays down with much less orange peel, and is much more resistant to everything. If it's a beater I wouldn't go crazy, clean it, scuff it, shoot it, done. When it starts to come apart just do it again.

NOW you're getting into MY expertise! I've painted gelcoat with Krylon spray paint several times. Several canoes, 1 Gheenoe, 1 stumpknocker, and a 4' fiberglass flounder gigging float! As long as you prep it well, the spray paint will hold nicely.

Jay there's a beater camo leafprint Wrangler running around that someone cleared with Glasurit. This thing is filled with rot and plastic in the body plus camo leafprint, but it's shiny as all. Lol. I scratch my head when I see it, but to each their own.
