Ok, so Ive picked up my 78 Master Angler sat. Seemed like a good deal considering the resale value of the trailer, cc, new leaning post, etc. The PO explained to me in best detail the condition of the floor and transom. However, the cap needs attention also. Ill post pix of the areas that I know need work and everyone can break the bads news of how far gone the hull is.
I knew it needed the floor redone because the PO bought it from someone that obviously didnt know what they were doing. They patched sections that are now breaking loose. The transom is delaminating but seems solid. I know the truth is that its hiding something inside. My plan is to ad a bracket with a swim platform for the kids. The cap was refinished but has sat for 4yrs and is bubbling and cracking. Questions: 1. Will the cap have to be removed to repair or is there a process thats easier? 2. When the floor is cut out what and where do I need to look for other problems before closing it back up? 3. The craft will probably never see the ocean again and will spend all its time on one of three lakes local. With that said, will the transom need to be raised? 4. Will the factory scruppers be sufficient or do they need to be changed or reconfigured? 5. Plan is to remove wood from transom and fill rather than replace wood. Will any bracing be needed for the bracket added? 6. Is there a previous build that everyone can suggest searching that contains the best details and pix? Thanks in advance guys!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I don't have the knowledge to help, but it looks like you've got a great platform to start with. Nice boat!

She looked good from a far but shes far from good. Something does not add up here it appears that the cap may have had shoddy work done to it as well as it appears to be delaminating? Given the condition of the boat I would suggest pulling the cap as well so you can get to the underside of it. Why it's delamination is anyone's guess but I would strip anything the previous owner did and replace.
Questions 1. Answered above 2. just inspect the stringers and check for water inside. While the floor is up you may want to consider raising it. 3. Depends on the type of boating you do. If the lake gets rough then you may want to raise the transom. Since you are already committed to replacing the transom I would suggest raising while you are in there. You are maybe talking another hours worth of work at most. 4. They will probably be sufficient but since you are replacing the floor I would suggest routing the scuppers out the stern. 5. Bracing not needed if you replace the transom and do it right. reinforcing the corners of the transom is important if putting on a bracket. If you have the room and like redundancy the go ahead and brace as it will not hurt anything. I am working on two older boats with good transoms but since they are old transoms we are going to brace. 6. Many good builds on this site over the years you will be here for hours searching and enjoying them all. strick |

Looks like the repairs previously were done from the top on the cap. Ill prob do the same since I have to strip the POs repairs. I plan to raise the transom but not enclose it so there will be a step thru to the platform. There is a green 20'cc with a flip up gauge pod I saw on here that is enclosed that is freakin awesome so it is tempting. This will be more of a pleasure boat for now but me & the boy may want to start fishing later on so I plan to leave the built in compartments & wells. What is the reason behind raising the floor? Ive seen it done on here but havent seen why. There are a lot of builds for sure but I have also seen where a lot of you guys brag on other boats, so is there a build that sticks out?

Anything Strick builds is pretty much guaranteed to be top notch with the best materials used, and he's a wealth of information. But the way he does it may be over and above most others skill level, although it's fun to watch. It's all a matter of what you can afford and what you feel capable of doing. There's a ton of options as far as resins, glass selections and even coring material and 100 different ways to skin the cat. Best bet is to read through a bunch of rebuild threads, look at the pics and you'll get an idea of which way you want to go with it. Once you figure out the building method you want to go with, you'll need to decide how crazy you want to get with materials and start shopping around for prices that suit your budget. I wouldn't stick with following one rebuild though. There's so much good information on each one that it definitely benefits you to browse.

CAT after reading your post about Strick I creeped around on his threads. Your description is correct about his work. He is my kind of guy! Not afraid to try anything and willing to get after it. Im a fast learner and working with my hands is my therapy. I grew up in a family owned metal fab shop and was AWS certified at age 15. Picked up on carpentry and concrete work along the way. Was the youngest superintendant at a local general contractor at 24. Dropped all of that and started in another trade, security system and life safety industry. With no prior experience I was on the second to be leading my own jobs after 90 days. Second only to a retired bomb tech out of the military. As you can see I like new challenges and get bored after a while. Ive owned over 150 cars since age 15. Ive had 6 this year. Some of them stripped all the way down and customized or restored. Many bored me and moved on. I decided I needed something new with 2 kids. They dont care for riding around in cars but they sure love the water. My first boat was a Cruisers Beachcomber 206. Completely restored the interior from the floor up. It was wood though. It had engine problems and old OMC foot no one wanted to touch. Knowing what I know now I would have glassed the transom and added a bracket and done away with the I/O. I lost a lot of money on that one. The next one I found I wanted to start on was an Aquasport 22-2. Mid to late 60s. Problem was it was a hull only and being new to boats I was a lil intimidated about the parts needed and pricing them was high. I could build my own trailer but even still after crunching the numbers I could find a complete project boat with trailer for what trailer build, cc, rigging, etc would cost me plus the time looking. So I posted it on CA forum and it sold the first night! I had already found this SC but didnt know anything about them. Just knew it was in my price range and complete. While talking to the Aquasport guy he suggested an SC project. I thought it was ironic I had already found one! So begins my new life as a SeaCraft owner. Im looking for the fellowship as much as Im looking for the info because frankly Im a workaholic and travel for work also. Plus Im finishing up a complete remodel of my house plus an addition. Most of my friends cant keep up!! I like being a part of something no one else has anyway and like having something no one else has. A sweet riding SeaCraft!!
![]() Strick your 20 is super nice. That enclosed transom and glassed bracket is superb. I will def be building my own bracket out of glass now. I have been pricing aluminum to fab my own at our shop but the glass bracket looks sooo much better when finished. Still not sure if Ill close mine in all the way up. I have a 6 and 10 yr old. Prob leave a lil drop for a step thru. |
