Signiture Paint

Has anybody used signiture paint on the interior hull sides, sole and fore deck. I was wondering if anybody had any first hand experience? I havae only ever used Interlux perfection and brightsides. How well does it cover and its it durable enough for the deck? As I understand there is no primer that needs to go down first and it can be painted in almost any temp down to 32 degrees. Any help is appreciated

I've only used it on the bottom and bootstripe, but based on how it's held up there, I think it would do fine on the deck. I plan to eventually use it on my deck and cabin top.

Capt. Chuck is the resident wizard on Signature Finish paint, having painted his whole boat with it! I'm sure he'll chime in here soon!

Prep and tooth is good. The search function is helpfulll. Not being mean. Tons of help here.

I purchased Signature paint to do my top deck and verticle interior. Also will be used on my teak. Should be doing some test painting soon. I'll let you know. All the supplies and enough paint to do my entire interior and bilge cost about $300.00. They even matched my previous Alwgrip color.

I just finished (5 days ago) a full rehab on a '77 Sceptre on which the outer hull, top deck/inner cockpit/cockpit deck, and windshield frame were painted with Signature paint in Awlgrip colors - Marlin Blue, Oyster White, and Black respectively. Pictures will be posted when the weather is nice enough for photos and I get time.

Signature paint is a pretty impressive product. I followed the instructions for 3 coats using a simple cabinet roller, and the boat looks great. Not perfect. Not as good as a decent spray job. There's the slightest bit of "orange peel" look that you CAN eliminate with some additional sanding and finishing steps if you want to go to the trouble. But here's the thing and what most DIY guys want to know - I did all the prep and painting myself without fancy equipment and can honestly say I got 80% of the looks with 20% (or less) of the cost and labor. My '74 Tsunami was professionally spray painted, and most people would not be able to tell the difference between the finishes on the two boats. Consider that a strong endorsement.

Like with all paints, the prep is the most important part of the process. Any pre-paint flaws will show. Actually, the best thing about the paint is subsequent touch-ups are easy, fast, and undetectable. That was a major consideration for me.

I can't comment on long term durability, but if it looks good for a decent period of time and is dirt simple to repaint, who cares. On most boats, the finish is going to get banged up in a few years anyway.

The Signature with non-skid additiive looks great on the top deck, but did not hide flaws well. My cockpit deck had some dings and scratches that I did not want to fully repair because of the trouble or the need to preserve the factory stripes, so I used Kiwigrip. It's even easier to use (no fumes, water clean-up) and the aggressiveness of the texture can be greatly varied. Another very impressive product.

Brian, as much as I like Signature paint, the Honey Teak treatment, which was the best product of it's type a few years ago, is no longer the best teak varnish. I've also used Epifanes Woodfinish Gloss, and found that it holds up better, no mixing is involved, and it also does not darken the wood as much. I varnished all my teak in 2006, with Honey Teak on the cabin door and Epifianes on all the rest. The cabin door finish is starting to deteriorate, but the rest of the teak still looks great. PowerBoat Reports also tested both and picked the Epifanes as the best. The key difference between the regular Epifanes Gloss varnish and the Woodfinish product is that the latter does not require sanding between coats if recoated within 72 hours, which makes it easier to quickly build up multiple coats.

I've also been doing some research lately on varnishing a mahogany front door for the house, and I've found the Epifanes, although expensive, is also the varnish preferred by most professional woodworking guys as the most durable for external use.
