I've mounted several of these. Just up from the keel so you can get to it. At cruising speeds they will read bottom depth fine but usually you are going too fast to really study the bottom topography. They are a great transducer just make sure that you mount it as low as possible in the boat so it will be under water at cruise. Also its a good idea to use 5200 liberally inside and out and put a little on the threads so it will lock the nut in place. Pipe wrench and big channel locks to tighten it down.
