Default 150' Saltwater series Merc 2001 Question

I just recently purchased a 18' seacraft 1989 with a 2001 Mercury. The motor is peeing a little hot and not very strong so I'm replacing the impeller. I have only located 4 screws holding the lower unit in, but the local parts supply shop says this unit should have 6 screws. Can anyone that knows this motor give me any tips on pulling the lower unit?

Thank you

First, Welcome to CSC.

Second, get yourself the Mercury factory service manual for your motor. You can usually find a good deal on Ebay. Don't get one of the after market manuals.

Third, if the 2001 is the same as my '96, there are two nuts on each side, one in the center front, and one at the rear concealed above the trim tab anode, six total.

Thanks for the info. I found the ones in the front and back but only one on each side.

jesse - the tell tail temp on 2.0, 2.4, and 2.5l mercs is hot compared to other motors 120+ degrees. You don't want to keep your hand under it. Also it takes a long time for the engine to come up to temp . . . thermostats don't open until block temp hits 143 degrees. you'll get a weak pee stream until the engine heats up. If you live up in New England . . . this time of year it seems to take forever.

If the engine is new to you. do the poppet, tstats, plugs, gear oil, and water pump?

p.s. - if you only found 4 . . . and you got the front, sides, and the one under the zinc . . . you are missing the 2 under cavitation plate.

they only carry 4lbs at idle anyway and it is hot - water pressure gauge will help when they start to need a pump

Thanks for the information, I'm learning as I go so all the info helps out a lot. Located the front screw, one on each side and the one under the trim tab plate. There are 2 I'm missing, where is the Zinc?

Thanks

I allways like having a water pressure gauge it can save the day if you pick up a bag and cut off the flow often before the impeller gets cooked. haven't done it but had thought of putting a pressure switch in if the pressure dropped to below 2-3 lbs . does hobbs make a switch that low??
