Can't speak for the outboard lower units, but I know several guys that run I/O's and swear by the upper and lower units by SEI? One who is a Mercruiser mechanic has installed a lot of the SEI units with very good results.Even the warranty on them is better.
He can't even buy the gears for the price that the entire I/O from SEI costs.I hear more good than bad about SEI.
I know that if my Mercruiser I/O craps out, I'll be going with an SEI unit

At the yard I work for here on the Cape we've installed a lot of SEI lower units/outdrives , for our more "price sensitive" customers.
They seem well built, and never had a problem with installation.

Anecdote 1: Just this week we had an SEI Johnson replacement lower unit blowup on a 22' SeaWolf (Seacraft knockoff) after 8 years of hard use!
Not bad for 900 bucks. Slapped another SEI unit on and he was off to the races.

Anecdote 2: Last year we ordered an SEI/Merc outdrive for a DIY customer, he took delivery of the drive, then came back a few days later saying the gear oil drain plug was stripped out, and the plug had been threaded in crooked.
Highly dubious considering these units show up brand new, freshly painted and beautiful, but I guess plausible.
Anyway, SEI swapped it out no extra charge, no questions asked.

That kind of customer service is impressive and rare.

Thanks Guys!! I'm leaning to just pulling off the bad original one I have and buy the SEI. They are located 45 minutes from me so it's getting to be a no brainer.

Default Genuine Mercury Parts

Donny, If you don't use Genuine Mercury parts your motor will no longer be covered by the warranty - then what will you do????

PS - you might want to try a shot of Apple Pie or a dollup of Pink Panty Drop in that old lower unit first. That thing would probably spool up like a Speedmaster and shift like a Power Glide!

Oh NO!!! I never thought about that!

Let me give this idea of spending real American dollars on my 2003 EFI engine, which is just barely out of warranty!! Maybe a new G2 250 HO eTec instead!!!!
