Default Alaska fishing info

Running off to Kenai Pen for a week.
Combat fishing for Chinook on Kenai and Russian R's will be in full swing.

Any secret places to get away and dodge the masses. Hoping most trout streams are open by arrival on 6/15. Any preferred flies between Homer and Denali? Probably take a 9'-6wt and 8wt Switch rod. Taking backpacks but will likely just do day hikes rather that backcountry treks.
Any advice appreciated.

Well, hopefully you were able to get some fish. I went out a couple of times with a friend on his 20' aluminum (not a Seacraft). Wind went from 0 to about 25 in a mater of minutes and sitting in the bow in that thing not fun.
We did manage a couple of small Halibut and several Cod. Got one Red a later day. My daughter and grandson stayed 3 days with us 30 miles into Denali NP. They had a couple of days free and I sent them down to Homer to go Halibut fishing. Turns out you can't Halibut fish on Wednesday. I was looking through the long list of rules for Salmon fishing and where and when you can fish. I read where King had to be measured before taking them out of the water???. Sitting here in Palmer for a bit, before heading back towards Fl, where the rules now make more sense to me.

I hear that, 95 pages of rules just fo the area between Homer and Denali entrance. We had nice chromer Kings and Steelhead at Anchor River starting at midnight Sat 17th. Kings were all nice 20-35 lbs as big as my leg. Steelhead around 20" but all catch and release in that stream. Went to Homer one evening to have dinner but didn't fish. Colder there than up in Denali. Met a local at the airport that lost 2 bro's when their boat flipped while fishing Halibut out of Homer on Tuesday.

Russian River was packed and the concept of "flossing" is best left for dentists and hot women on a toasty beach or SeaCraft. Didn't fish it. Fished Quartz Creek for a while saw a huge mutated King but didn't have enough time or gear to give it a fair go. I hope to return with more insight and preparation and work that and Russian over more heartily.

Beautiful place to be sure, but I have never seen such complex fishing regs. Hope you had a great trip.

On a sadder note, 2 people were killed by black bears the week I was there. One of them was young biologist taking soil samples at Pogo Mine - she was a niece of our friend in Anchor Point - just devastating. The other was a 16 year old young man attacked while participating in a mountain race near Alyeska resort.

Sorry to hear about your friend's niece. My grandson wasn't able to go out in the boat in Homer, but did fish from the shore on the "spit". He tried the "Fishing Hole" without success, but went down to lands end and caught flounder or cod with pretty much every cast. So he was happy.
