No problem. A SeaStar Hydraulic helm is simply a pump pushing fluid to a reacting ram. The bigger the pump in volume per turn equals more fluid to move the ram farther per turn. Lower volume out put helm like a 1.4 or 1.7 take more turns and less leverage to turn the motor. Higher volume pumps like a 2.4 push more fluid per turn and require less rotations of the wheel to move the ram just as far. If you are moving more fluid per turn the energy or effort needed to turn the wheel is increased and you will likely need the bigger diameter wheel to compensate for the effort unless you are Chuck Norris. Chuck Norris's boat doesn't have a helm.... If he wants to turn he just spins the earth until he is on course.

1.7 cubic inch is pretty standard. That's what I have (I think...). Should say on the back of the helm somewhere. Here's a listing on the seastar website (at the bottom) of all the helm pumps, their displacements and part numbers. http://www.seastarsolutions.com/prod...standard-helm/

Haha. That’s good stuff! I enjoyed that rebuttal. So I guess I need to look behind the wheel and look for a label on the pump before I make a decision. Ultimately, I have no idea what I have but that it was put in new in 2006. Lines look brand new still and the fella didn’t use the boat much. Thanks again

Got it. Thanks gents
I’ll look. Since I have 1/400th the strength of chuck Norris I’m assuming I’ll need to stay at 15 inches if I have a 1:7 cu inch. Haha Quote:
