How Did This Happen and How Can I Fix It?
I have been working on my Sceptre restoration project for several years now. I am about done and will start using the boat soon. Yesterday I put the cover that goes over the cabin entrance hatch and it doesn't fit. It's as if the hatch cover shrank (unlikely) or this part of the boat has moved slightly and not allowing the hatch cover to go in place.
Any suggestions as to how I can fix this? I know it is unlikely, can I purchase an after-market hatch to replace the one I have? I would really like to replace this hatch cover and the ladder that is built for the cabin but I understand it is not available either. |

I have big concerns as to why the hatch opening doesn't match. Did you have the deck and or cap off?

Negative - we did some glass work on the console but nothing that I think should have separated the opening to the cabin.

looks to me as if the hinge was put on incorrectly and the result is the back of the hatch (closest to the hinge) is rubbing against the opening. If you raise the back of the hatch a little, it should close nicely

Did it fit correctly before ? If you've been restoring for a few years, maybe it's a detail you forgot ?
Do the seams hidden under the teak trim near the helm and passenger footstools look solid ? Where that hinged hatch is most forward and meets the windshield - is that part of the topside cracked ? Is the width of the opening in the cabin ( the area where this hatch covers ) equal in width from forward to aft ? And down the door way or does it get wider as you measure aft ? Something ain't right. |

What screws did you use on the hinge? They should be flat heads. Make sure they are all seated flush.
Just a thought on your issue. Hope you figure it out! |
