I remember seeing that “wedge” on the outer panel on my Seafari. As I remember, you could see it by sighting aft along the chine from forward. Seems like it started about 8-10’ forward of the tramson. All the other panels were straight and I believe that wedge was part of the original design. It probably explains why all the original 20’ models when powered by the lightweight 1960’s vintage motors could plane at ~12 mpn. Since a deep V hull develops more lift and rises higher out of the water as you increase speed, the wedge is only effective at low speed. By the time you get up to about 40 mph, the outer panel is almost completely out of the water, the wedge has no effect on performance at high speeds.

I use to own a 75 Mako 17 and I one day noticed a couple of small cracks on the underside near the transom(probably had something to do with all those trips trailering to Key West). I grounded down the area and laid in layers of cloth along the entire width and sanded the area to blend in to the bottom about 6-7 inches forward. That created somewhat of a wedge and it made a huge difference in making my 60 hp get that boat up on plane.
