Renewing gel coat

I know it's been touched on before, and everybody has their favorite products and techniques, but what are your current thoughts and recommendations re: cutting/buffing/waxing the topsides on our old (yellow) '76 Sceptre? I don't think it'll actually need wet sanding, but expect to do some fairly aggressive compounding in a couple areas. I have a cheapo buffing machine and foam pads. Thanks!

My Seacraft has paint but in the process of "restoring" an old Whaler (much to GFS's dismay). I wet sanded with 600/1000 then used Ardex Vanishing Grit polish on a variable speed buffer with wool pad. I'm very happy with the results and would definitely use it again. I doubt you'll be happy with the cheap buffer part.

I had access to a DA sander and used 600, 800 then 1000. Sanded it dry and followed with the 3m buffing compound in the black bottle, has some grit in it. I have a 30 year old Black & Decker variable speed polisher with a wool pad. Went back over with a cleaner wax to get the swirls out. I'm pleased.
