Question on hydraulic steering
So Saturday when I went out I had a issue with my steering. It would work somewhat but it was soft and would not stay straight and if you would not constantly steer to the right but would go left. I bought some fluid and the hose and tried to bleed it out but with limited knowledge, tools and being in the water it stayed the same.
I did google some info the shows how to connect various hoses on a t connector it get the air out. My question is the following.....is bleeding the air our fix the system or do I have a new or rebuild of the ram coming up? |

Bleeding is successful fix in most cases

It takes 2 people to properly bleed the air out of your hydraulic system.
One to add fluid at the helm & turn the wheel. The other to open & close the bleeder valves at the engine . BTW: Have a shit load of rags on hand!

I had a problem with air in the system and bled it. It worked fine for a while but started to get spongy and the fluid got low. I bought a seal kit for the ram. I inspected the shaft and didn’t see any obvious scratches or cracks. Upon further inspection, using my fingernail, I found a tiny, what appeared to be a crack. I cleaned the area well and then mixed up a small amount of jb weld marine. After putting a very small amount over the area and letting it cure, I carefully sanded it with something like 1000 grit paper. Installed the kit , bled the system again and that was a couple years ago. Still holding (knock on wood).

I used a system like this and it works great if you're solo and makes minimal mess. Looks easier than the hull truth method.

Easier with two people but I’ve done it alone by hanging the bottle over the helm...like capt chuck says have wraps handy...
