Tsunami Questions for " Do- it - yourselfers "
I'm relatively new to the board and am looking for a few resources ( people who have been there, done that... ) to ask specific questions with regards to re-doing a 23' Tsunami.
For example: Where is there balsa located in the boat ? Are the sringers in the engine compartment foam filled ( are all the stringers foam filled ? ) Are the windshield side windows originally glass or plastic ? I've heard someone has platic - but was plastic OEM ? Are the window gaskets easily purchased and replaceable ? What is the floor lay-up made of ? Best tool to cut the wood out to remove the soft transom, while leaving the outside gelcoat untouched. Thx, Alan |

I don't think there is any balsa. Plywood yes, but not end grain balsa. Not sure why that would matter.(?)
All the stringers are foam filled except for the one on the keel. That is wood. On my 20 sceptre, all glass except for the active window. My window frame was made by American Marine Products. Still doing business in Florida. Floor is made of sandwiched plywood. Not sure about your question on the transom. I'll be going in from the inside of the boat, by removing the liner. I'll most likely use an air driven die grinder. The smaller the kerf, the least dust. [img]images/icons/shocked.gif[/img] I haven't been there and done that, but I'm going there. I asked about the balsa because the bow is a sandwich construction, and where the anchor hole is, the wood is a bit mushy from rain - I'm trying to figure out what wood is there. It seems like balsa end grain form the small view I have - but I'm not sure.
What is the purpose of the stringers being foam filled and if the foam is wet, is that a problem ? Thx for the glass info. My frame is American too -I just shot off an e-mail to them about glass replacements and gaskets replacements ( although this stuff might be easier/cheaper for me to get up here ( NY ). With regards to the transom - I am removing (2) i/o's, then the transom and re-installing (1) i/o. The transom is coming out from the inside. I just wanted to know what tool will get the majority of the old transom out while minimizing the chance of going through the skin. Thx for your input. I appreciate all the help I can get. Alan |

as to windows,original config. was: side windows and center(folding section) plexiglass;port and stbd front windows,tempered glass.If you opt to replace,might want to stay with plexi as opposed to lexan,seems to be a little more consistent optically .I ordered new window gasketing from american marine in miami(i think) original manufacturers of that windshield.I cant seem to find their address,if I find it I'll email it to you. As to the transom,mine was totally removed,both inside and out and a new one tabbed and glassed,then imroned-raybo did a great job matching to the original gel coat. As i mentioned before had a glass shop cut new side windows for me using old one as templates-suffolk auto glass on carleton ave in Islip Terrace-ran me about$175. |

Have you considered leaving the dual I/o's? Merc's 120 hp diesels are light and burn next to nothing. They are about $9500 list each with a transom setup and alpha 1. That would be one badd ass bitch!!!!

Bob, it's nice to know you live less than a mile from me; Carleton Ave, Raybo - you're going to be a GREAT assett to me ! As for the glass windows - see attached thread on this topic - I just typed in American Marine Products and up it came - so I sent them an e-mail. I have heard mixed things whether the side windows were glass or plexi, that's why it's a little confusing. Once I know for sure, I'm getting replacements and new gaskets.
As for diesel replacements- it sounds so enticing ! And an eaiser job too . But it's a lot of that green stuff, $$$ up front. I'd rather go w/ one big diesel - I don't have a clue of the price or what engine would be right. Can you tell I'm hell bent on one motor ? I guess it's just that I don't want the double headache. And, where am I going ? I'm more a Bay fisherman than anything else. Sure, w/ this boat I may get into some shark fishing - but the southern guys have it made w/ blue water just a few miles offshore. Us New Yorkers, unfortunately are alooong way from that type of fishing. My project would be a piece of cake if I went w/ (2) motors. Either (2) 4 cylinders or (2) diesels. It's just that I never have owned i/o' s and a lot of people I know bitch about them, so I figure that if I got one new one - I could care for it very well and mininmize my exposure to problems. Two motors seems like twice the work and twice the aggravation down the road. -Alan |

Hi, I have a complete set of glass for a Sceptre windshield. I bought them from American Marine. The glass is a pinch short of fitting my frame, but they might work for you. If you want them.. Email me at littlebishop@erols.com
