Welcome to the site. I had the same engine on my 23 Sceptre and it finally kicked the bucket at the end of June. When we bought the boat 5 years ago the engine had only 250-300 hours on it and ran beautifully. A word of caution though - without a flotation bracket on the back of your 20 MA, that transom will sit very low to the point that you'll take water over with a couple guys back there. That 225 probably weighs 100# more than your 140. IMO, a 225 on that hull is overkill. Good luck. [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img]

First post on this site---be gentle please Recently a distant cousin sold me a '78, '20 MasterAngler that looks a little scruffy(well used)but seems to be very sound. It's on a cruddy but useable trailer and has some equipment and electronics. Power is an '85 140 Evinrude which he described as "wore out". I'm going to see if I can maybe revive it. It was running and shifting in summer '02. My neighbor has a 1989 225 Evinrude '20shaft off a bassboat. Looks real clean, faded paint but no corrosion. It's on a stand in his garage and he wants $1500 for it. Anything awful I should know about that era 225Ev? Are the mounting holes for the transom bracket maybe the same as the 140? If this works out I could be SeaCraftin' pretty cheap. I've wanted a SeaCraft for 'bout 30yrs. and finally bungled into a deal on one.

Scotts right, a 225 is probably too heavy for a 20 inch transom. I'm in the same boat as you as far as a motor goes. Its hard to find 20 in 4cyl motors. I had a 140 Johnson on another boat( very moody and expansive electrical parts that were exclusive to 120's and 140's) rebuilding an 85 might not be worth your trouble because the electrical will eat you alive. All the bolt holes are compatable.

Thanks ya'll, I was afraid of the weight. I'm big-n-fat, so that doesn't help either. I had an '86 110 Ev. on an old 18' Angler hull for a long time. Sweet running motor always. Is a good running 140 appreciably stronger than the 110? I hope. I had to use a lot of throttle(gas too) to keep the Angler going w/3 big adults aboard. I'm trying to thin out old car projects so I have time and room to mess with the boat. I see the tilt motor housing is badly rusted, but haven't gotten much farther. How much compound and buffing can the gel coat take on this boat? It's yellow and dull and dirty looking. Not scraped or scratched up much though. Thanks, Howard

The 1985 140 if im not mistaken is the looper version. Much, much stronger then the 110.

Thanks Joe, hopefully it's not too far gone to be revived. I think I might have found another similar year non running 140 I might try and nab for parts. I know this boat/motor combo was used a lot so I'm assuming the 140 must've been adequate power.

I have a 73 20 cc yellow with a 150 johnson on a jack. I put up a splash board to help keep some of the water out. My boat does self bail with no one in it but floods when I get in so I get one of the kids to plug the drains before I get on!!I do 33 kts WOT and the engine is not running right and cruise comfortably in the 20's. I don't see how anyone can go faster cuz it just skips over the water! The jack allowed me to use a 25" shaft on my 20" transom so you get more choices. I have completely refinished my boat except for the transom which has remained solid...knock on wood! I also love my yellow color with black bottom paint and rub rail.

Welcome to the site. I run a 1970, 20 ft master angler and yep...fighting yellow lady. I had a 1990 225, 25 inch shaft. Pictures are on the site in the 20 footers. My transom was redone and it was rebuilt 25 inch instead of the 20. I run the boat with a jackplate. The wieght is an issue as she squats a bit at the rear and I have to plug the thru deck self bail holes before I board her. I have updated the engine with a 97 oceanpro 225. I would suggest building up the transom to 25 inch. Its do able.....Those OMC engines when properly taken care of and having at least 95 lbs of pressure will run and run and run. Roland, Your pics are very inspirational, I can see lots of thought went into storage for your fun equipment. The 225 does look HUGE. I've often seen spray rails added on to SeaCraft hulls and wondered if they hurt the ride quality heading into a chop. I'm sure they deflect water from climbing the side and blowing in your face. I haven't caught up enough on other projects/hobbies yet to look at the tired 140 or my neighbors 225. I'm sure when I get started on the boat I'll be chasing you around asking questions.
