Default bottom paint

Hi all new member here. I'm looking at a 1973 23 CC but unfortunately it's bottom painted. The current owner stated the prior owner kept it in the water from time to time and thats why it's painted. What is the general conscensus on a bottom painted boat? Can the paint be removed easily? Can I paint over this stuff? The current owner says the transom and flooring is solid. Or should I forget it and keep looking? I would be trailering it myself therefore have no need for the paint. Plus I hate the way the boat looks with the paint! Thanks for your time and you have a great site here.

Welcome Aboard Uncle Matt,The best wau is if Your gonna make a mid to large investment have it Surveyed ! You can also use this for the Insurance as most require for boats over 10 years old.The bottom paint can't be painted over,If you go back through the archives You'll find many discussions on Oven Cleaners & what does & doesn't work !One thing is for sure have Plenty of BEER !You'll be amazed at what the words BEER & Theory's will get Ya on this sight !
The one thing is , You can count on Years of Experiance from These CSCr's.

Hi Matt,
I am the owner of the boat on ebay that you are talking about.
The guy that I bought the boat from is also on this forum,"seaojoe".He can answer almost any question you may have on the boat,he can give you an unbiased opinion.
Course I may have to pay him off,to say the right thing
Doug

Welcome to the forum Matt,
I wouldn't worry about the bottom paint on a boat of that year. The fact is that most will have paint. If you can find one without than its the excpetion not the rule. You can take the paint off but its not easy. No matter what kind of chemicals or stippers you use you'll end up with a sander in your hand and a mess on the floor. There are harder bottom paints that you can roll or spray over the current paint that will hold up to the trailer a little better if you choose to leave paint on and and want a little fresher look.
