I have a starboard rectangle screwed and 5200'd in place to cover the opening. On the starboard I cut an opening for a 6 in. Beckson screw in circular hatch with a clear cover. I can unscrew the circle hatch for quick access and enough room for small work like getting the screen on my pumps cleaned off if needed. The clear cover lets me see if water is in there. If I need to make bigger repairs I remove the larger cover and re do the 5200. Works well for me on my 18.

3M Sealant. Comes in a tube to be used from a caulk gun. Is fairly permanent and works great. The only time I need to pull the whole cover plate up is if I need to change plumbing peices. I can switch pumps, clean bilge etc. through the circle hatch. I guess you can use silicone or something else but since I do not need to pull the whole thing I thought better to be more permanent.
