My exhaust came out of the transom right at the water line, just a c-hair in the water, with a flapper. I then ran the exhaust just under the deck with a muffler. An exhaust riser from an I/O was used for clearance and height, no trap and no troubles yet, knock on wood. Let me know if you want to take a look. The deck was also raised which aloud for the exhaust to run a little higher in relation to the waterline.

I've had one fall off out east broke right at the threads was not fun to magiver it 20 miles offshore

They break too easy for my liking. There are stronger, more reliable metal fittings that, in my opinion, would be better. Kind of like the age old argument about plastic thru-hulls...

Balsa is such a sponge, it was soaking wet trying trying to pull it was no fun at all

anybody around here experienced in aligning an engine? I'm a little over my head? really just need a few pointers! I need to know were to set the engine also shaft length once i have position.

I'm no expert but this is what I did. Install cutlass in strut and bolt up. put shaft with surfaced flange in boat through cutlas and find the sweet spot and support shaft. I then lower motor in and lightly bolted motor to flange. Then thats when I drilled for motor mounts etc., in your case you don't have the option. the mounts should be close to the beds. When you do your fill motor install then do your final alingment. one more mention, I made sure my mounts were adjusted as low as possible ( motor sits low in the mount) i actually put 1/2 inch aluminium spacers below mount. For shaft length made sure you have enough for wheel puller, locking nuts, and pin. I f-d up and had to cut a shaft nut in have to gain enough space, just a close call but think about it.
