Default Bracket Performance

What a debate could be had with regards to the performance of a bracketed o/b...

Once and for all: Is a 23' Seacraft Tsunami a good candidate for a bracket ?

From my marine community and here I've heard it all: " Yes it's great. No, it sucks. It porpoises. Poor manuerability. Poor reverse-ability. The greatest thing I ever did. A lot of cockpit room. It changes the ride of the boat. The scuppers will not work right. "

Aside from losing any fish due to the bracket, is there anyone that is not happy with a bracket ? Are there any real performance drawbacks ? Why wouldn't I bracket ?

I know this topic has been covered, but I have read and re-read many of the threads and have realized that there is no definitive answer - yet... The beauty of this site is that we are all basically, " in the same boat " luckily, and can be very specific about every aspect of these boats.

Let's get to the bottom of this one.... " To bracket... or not to bracket... that is the question... "

It comes down to what you want to do. Im sure this will be the same as the 4 stroke / 2 stroke debate. I normally recommend stay with the set up the boat is. I have seen some boats run much better changing it over to a bracket and I have seen some need much work to make it right. If it was mine and it was a io then I would bracket it. If it was a customers I would say go back with the io. I like outboards much better. When it comes to customers boats they dont realize how much work a bracket needs. Once the job is done and the boat gets splashed you may have to spend another two or three days of relocating and rerigging for the final setup to work right.

Its not just the mounting of the bracket. Most of the times items inside the boat will have to be relocated to get the ballance and ride right. This can take alot of time along with pulling your hair out. Once you install the bracket your changing the whole ballance of the boat and you have to get the ballance back again.
