Looking at a hull with an I.D. number that ends with the last two numbers of 76. Does this mean the hull was built in 1976? The owner is claiming it's a 78 hull. Most manufacturers indicate the year with the last two digits in the hull number?
Just curious if Seacraft did the same back then? Thanks |

Its very common to have 1970's boats with a different Hull Id Year than the title. I had a 1976 hull id with a 1977 title on my 23. It dosen't necessarily mean the boat was built in 1976. It can mean many things. It could be a 1976 hull that wasn't finished in 76 or wasn't delivered to the dealer until 77 or 78. It could also be a 76 model that was built in 78. The hull numbers in 76 and 77 are pretty messed up. But two years on a 20+ year old boat really don't make much difference in value. Condition matters the most regardless of the year.

On mine the boat was built in 1976 and first titled in 1977 thus (back then) it was a new boat and it was a 1977 mode even though it was build in 1976

A boat with 76 as the last two digits of the hull ID number and a title claiming it's a '77 year model means that the boat was first registered after August (eighth month is when the new model year starts) of 1976. At least that is what the manufacturer of my 1977 SeaCraft told me.
I have never heard of a boat that jumps TWO calendar years from when it was popped out of the mold to when it was registered. If the seller has a legitimate title for it that states it is a '78 boat and the ID numbers are on that same title with 76 as the last two digits, I doubt I would worry about which of the two years it is. Either way, the boat was PHYSICALLY made during the bicentennial I would think. I too used to have a 1976 with a 1977 title year. Seems like that is a pretty common setup. August to December of '76 must have been kinda busy |
