Default Mariner Engines Anyone?

As I posted the other day, I water tested an 18 ft CC with a 200 Mariner. I have to say it pushed the boat to water in the eyes speed. However, this was the absolute loudest engine I have ever heard. I have never owned a Mariner/Mercury and wondered if this is common. It was the worst at 3000 RPM with improvement at high revs. Max output was about 5800RPMs. ***Just A Note of Thanks for all the help others have given, Otto, Sorry I have not called you. My Granchild and family flew in Sat.

A 200 on an 18'. That thing must fly!!!

Mariner, a Mercury in disguise, lower end, same basic motor though. I have had a few Mercs, the older ones are a bit noisy, especially if the cover had, past tense, insulation. If it did have some, and it is gone, you can replace it. If it didn't, and there is clearance, you can get some stuff called "Dynomat" and install it inside the cover. This will quiet the thing down amazingly well. It is used in high-end car audio applications and most car sound stores carry it. It can also be found less expensively online. I used it in a car when I was younger. Used it on a friends outboard and it made so much of a difference it was unbelieveable.

I would have the motor checked if it was unusually noisy though. Especially if you are really concerned about it. Also, look for another boat with a Mariner on it and go check it out, compare, see if it is real or perceived.

Thanks, Going to have it checked out and YES, the boat does move pretty fast across the water. The guy I got it from was going to put a 225 on it. He is a pilot and I guess no speed is too fast

Hi Ted-

My disaster took place with a 1997 225 Mariner efi. I bought it with 850 hours on it, maybe my first mistake... but the guy is meticulous with his gear, so I bit. The long and short of it, I spent most of the summer awaiting marina service and for all the cash I dumped into it to fix you name it, the engine blew a rod in September. A fine how do you do! I did not have a positive experience with my Mariner at all. Not to say this will happen to you of course. But mine was also very loud. I have a brand new 225 Evinrude and it is really quiet, yet in comparison to my old Mariner, a B-Series Cummings diesel would be too!

Sorry Ted, I had to pipe in. I just cringed when I see a Mariner posting that's all...

Ted, I have a 1986 18' SeaCraft with a 1992 Mercury 200. The engine is fairly noisy, but not so bad that I can't deal with it. It is about typical of that year range of 2-strokes. I re-built my entire engine and lower unit myself and really love its simplicity (sp?). The draw backs, of course are that it drinks gas compared to the newer injected engines. If you can do your own engine work or want to learn, it is a great engine. Parts availability for that engine is also numerous. Ebay is loaded with everything you could ever need if you had to do a rebuild or replace something and most are cheap. It's kind of like the Chevy 350 of boat engines as far as being easy to get parts and work on. It will push my 18' at over 60 mph at about 6000 rpm, but I rarely ever do that...Toadfish

Any mishap at that speed is painless
