I used Awl Grip on my 20' and three years later it's still looking good. And it was sprayed.

I painted my boat with Sterling brand two part paint with the role and tip method came out very good. I would say if you spray Awlgrip would be my first choice if you role and tip Sterling would be my first choice. SPRAYING IS VERY DANGEROUS if you don’t use a full air line/ hose respirator face mask protection. I have herd of people dying not using the proper protection so if you spray be careful. As for the prep work remove all wax and oil from the boat sand the gel coat with 220 grit paper, apply one coat of primer (use the same manufacturer as the paint) sand smooth then apply 3 light coats of paint if you spray no sanding if you role and tip sand between the coats of paint. there are several threads on this sight about painting if you go back and look at them.

I sprayed mine with Petit Easypoxy mainly because I was afraid of the health risks spraying the 2 parts, cause I've heard horror stories too.The stuff was really easy to use, and has held up well except for the non skid area on the deck.Maybe I should have gone a few extra coats there or maybe it's just that the 1 parts aren't as durable, but the non-skid is getting dull. It's not peeling or anything. In fact I was thinking of taping it off and rolling/tipping just the non skid but with the spring we had, I never got to it.

I am considering re-doing the inside of my 18. Is awlgrip reccommended? What prep work is necessary and should this be sprayed?

Barnaby, I'm Awlgripping my boat as we speak. Just be prepared to see your wallet shrink. I just added up my costs on paint supplies so far and between the primer(takes more primer than paint 1 1/2 gallons of both parts) paint 1 gallon each part, Reducers for each, Awlgrip surface cleaner, Misc Tape(very Expensive) sandpaper, a cheap gun($50) and respirator inexpensive cartdrige type. I've now totaled about $875.00 in materials. Its coming out good but its a lot of work. I haven't even started the hull yet but I'm about finished with the deck.

If your only going to do the deck you should'nt have so spend as much as I did. I bought enough paint to do the whole boat. A gallon Kit(Primer, Activator,Reducer) costs about $170.00 and a gallon Kit for the paint for all three parts is about $280. You can probably get away with less than half that if your only doing the deck and buy it in quart kits.

70s boat, When you prepared the interior for painting, what method did you use to prep the non-slip areas?

Barnaby, I only work on mine an hour or two at a time at night. But, If i had to guess I woud think the inside on an 18 would be 50 hours or so. If you have any major floor repairs maybe longer. I think my recycle guys get a workout every couple of weeks with bud light bottles.
Mal, on my first Seacraft I completely sanded the stripes down to smooth flat deck with an 8" soft pad and 80 to 100 grit peel and stick pads on my buffer. I then shot awl grip with griptex on the entire floor. It came out great but is hard to keep clean no matter how much you scrub it looks dirty.
This time I just took off the rough spots on top and left the smoooth 1/2 inch line in the floor. I filled what pin holes I could see and shot the 545 primer on the floor. A lot more pin holes showed up then and I had to fill them and prime it again. I plan on shooting the floor with paint now and then I'll tape off the smooth lines leaving only the areas exposed that I want to non-skid. My hope is that it will look very close to what was there origionally. If I were to do it again I would sand then roll gel coat to fill pin holes before spraying the primer. The primer dosen't like to settle in the pinholes and fisheyes around them when you spray it, thus the two coats I had to do.
