Why do you want a survey?? Decide on what YOU want the boat insured for and then insure it for an "agreed value" and be done......

That is the way I had my old SeaCraft insured. You can get a survey done but what if they say it is worth, let's say, 5 grand. I think not!!!

Boat US is not writing new policies down here anymore. They decided not to. Found that out when I went to have them write the policy on the new boat back on April. Had the policy through West Marine and when the two merged, well, they stopped writing. Hence, I now have the boat insured with Geico. No claims to speak of so I can not tell you if they are good or bad, hope I never find out. Check with your insurance carrier on you auto and see if they offer the "agreed value"...

I sell insurance for a living most insurance companies want a survey on boats over 10 yrs old I had a survey done in Broward about 2 yrs ago they appraised the boat for $38 I had put $32 in it. I ended up insuring the boat through Nationwide (my son works for them) was cheep and a good policy. Most boats like cars are insured for actual cash value less depreciation. There are a few companies that sell their policies for stated value but will cost you a lot. I also bought a $169.95 locking device that goes through the wheel and is very thick, you can’t remove it with out a key or a cutting torch. Sorry about your friend’s boat it seems that they like those new boats I hope they think my old 77 SeaCraft is to old to mess with.

Capt Brad-

Give Brian Stetler a call .....www.amarinesurveyor.com.

He surveyed my 23 Mako in Florida before I flew down. He was very, very thorough and gave a very accurate replacement value in Florida dollars (worth more up here in Boston but that is another issue).

Tell him Ed Mancini recommended that you call.

Capt. Brad,
Are you going to be running your Seacraft as a Charterboat? If so You may want to check out CharterLakes Insurance Company, you get a littlebit of a discount by joining the NACO.
If not, then shop around. When i had my 24 Mako, Allstate offered a replacement policy on the engines for $125.00 a year, no brainer as far as i was concerned.

JW..You mentioned that Allstate had an engine replacement policy. Do you buy that when the engine is new ?? Is it applicable for I/O ?? Im not sure what that is. Any input would be great.

Catman,
I am not sure this was a few years ago. They might not even offer it anymore. For my big boat i am with Charterlakes and they offer a hull and machinery coverage. Mind you though I run as a charterboat and my rig is a 1970 Hatteras, My Insurance is a bit on the high side.
All i can say is all is all they can say is no.
One other thought, my Mako at the time was 2 years old with 75 hours on both engines, newness might be applicable.
