Default Fuel tank size on 1986 23 outboard

I picked up a 23 outoboard and ran it this summer. I had problems fueling it up. Could never tell if tank was truly full. Gauge is obvioiusly off. I was told it holds 125 gallons but not sure and don't like spilling fuel or running out as means to the answer. Anyone have an '86 or know the answer. Thanks

Larry,

Welcome to the site. I have an '89 23 CC w/ 200 Yamaha. I replaced the tank this spring with 133 gal. aluminium from sptanks.com. They built to my specs and coated with epoxy. Nice tank. Included an electric sending unit installed.

My tank was foamed in and had several small leaks where the foam was touching. The fill tube was cracked and leaking as well.

Length x width x height / 231 = volume in gallons

(Measurements in inches)

The new tank is roughly 28" wide x 11" high x 116" long outside. If I did it again, I'd make it smaller and shim it in for better air flow.

Using Scott's formula, Otto's tank comes out to 154.66 gallons .

Salty Dog had hair in that picture. Last weekend, he was working with 2 part epoxy and got some in what hair he had. He had to shave his head to get it out. Too funny...

Otto ...Thats interesting ... even if you use SPTanks volume calculator with your numbers its still 154.66....wonder where 21 gallons went??

same width and height and 99" long gets you to 132 gallons
