No Hull ID Number

Hi,

Someone at the AC show was saying that their SeaCraft had no Hull ID Number and was curious how to identify it's age. Any comments?

I asked how he knew it was a SeaCraft and he seemed pretty sure. Could it be a Mosley?

IF IT DOESN’T HAVE A I. D. # THEN LEGALLY IT ISN’T A SEACRAFT ANY LONGER IT NOW IS CONSIDERED A HOMEMADE BOAT. WHEN I RE DID MY BOAT I PUT TAPE OVER THE I D # AND PAINTED AROUND IT I WOULDN’T EVEN SAND TO CLOSE TO THE NUMBERS I USED PAINT THINNERS TO REMOVE ANY PAINT ON THE NUMBERS AND THEN SCRAPED WITH A KNIFE ALL EXCESS DEBRA. SO THE BOAT HULL IS LIGHT BLUE EXCEPT THE RED

Actually there can be more than one reason that a boat does not have a hull ID # other than being a homemade boat (the final two letters on the registration numbers indicate homemade or not).

In some cases when the same hull number was duplicated with one or more other vessels, the state of Florida would issue a silver metallic sticker to put in that place that started with FLZN instead or SECF.

Also, I'm told that prior to 1970, the hull ID # that we have become quite used to now did not exist on a great many production boats.

I have a 1971 20' CC that has no hull ID #. I also have letter from the Florida Department of Natural Resources explaining the above ( a 1992 letter) just in case any new-on-the-job Coast Guard type finds the situation questionable. To alleviate any additional problems, I was issued a sticker by the same people to put in that spot and an updated title. It's the original 1971 transom, and it had no number.

When discussing this with several boatyards that have been around awhile, they were completely familiar with pre-1970 boats that had no numbers on the starboard side of the transom.

I spoke with Mike at Wildfire Marine in Stuart about his 20'CC (a 1970) and he claimed that it never had a number to start with.

As far as determining the age of the boat? - have a peak at the title and registration I guess.

I am having difficulty finding the ID# on my transom. Maybe it was one of those stickers. Is there any other place where it would be marked, maybe i am just overlooking it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way whoever put the boat test articles up thank you I had never seen a picture of a 25 seafari in the water as my project is still a virgin.

Just wanted to bring back this old thread from 03 about the hull Vin # as this has caused me some confusion recently.

Hull ID engraved on the starboard side of the transom became a requirement for boat manufacturers sometime in 1973. I found this out after talking with CS guru Bigshrimpin when I became concerned because I was not able to find a hull ID on the transom of the 1973 25 seafari that I recently acquired from S cal. However two other 1973 seacrafts that I own clearly have Hull ID numbers stamped on the starboard side of the transom.

My 25 Seafari is a '72. I've found no hull ID other than the foil decal shown below. It's located on the inner liner just aft of the cabin bulkhead on the port side. There is no cast-in-place HIN on the transom, but the transom was redone in an earlier restoration, so I can't say with certainty whether it was ever there. Based on the fact that the ID # on the title is not in the usual HIN format, I suspect it never had a HIN.

Those aluminum stickers were used in most of the seacraft hulls built in the 70's even the ones that have the hull ID stamped in the transom after the coast guard requirement. The Vin # on my 73 is a 5 digit number 25046 which I think stands for 25 seafari hull # 46. The aluminum sticker was removed on my boat. What does your Vin read?

The ID Number on the title is MC5432KA. The serial number on the foil sticker is stamped 250I9. I suspect it's intended to read 25019 because a capital "I" was also used when they stamped "I600 lbs for persons and extra gear". Maybe the guy that stamped my sticker couldn't find the "1" stamp that day. That would be consistent with your serial number and make mine hull #19.

Makes sense to me about the "I" but I wonder why your title reads different? Maybe that is a "state" designated hull id?

I suspect it is. I'm thinking it wouldn't hurt to inscribe it in the transom just to cover all the bases. Might save having to explain to the authorities that boats manufactured in '72 and before didn't have HINs
